What is Al-Anon?
Al-Anon Family Groups is a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family disease and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.
What is Al-Anon's Purpose?
Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families and friends of alcoholics. Al-Anon is non-professional. We do not counsel or advise our members, nor do we endorse or affiliate with other agencies or organizations.
Is non-professional, self-supporting, spiritually based, and apolitical. It welcomes all cultures and is available almost anywhere.
Who can be a member of Al-Anon?
Anyone whose life has been affected by someone else’s drinking qualifies for Al-Anon.
This includes immediate family members, distant relatives, friends, roommates, co-workers, partners, neighbors, and even people from our past.
Alanon is a separate organization from Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). Al‑Anon is, however, based on Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions that have been adapted from A.A.

What is Alateen?
Alateen, a part of the Al-Anon Family Groups, is a fellowship of young people (mostly teenagers) whose lives have been affected by someone else's drinking whether they are present in your life or not. By attending Alateen, teenagers receive strength, courage and hope by meeting with others in similar situations.
Alateen members conduct their own meetings with the guidance of adult Al‑Anon members who are certified by their state or province to serve as Alateen Group Sponsors.
Alateen Members Involved in Alateen Service (AMIAS’s) are carefully screened, and are required to attend training for the safety of all members.
On ALATEEN SAFETY
Alateen is a fellowship of young Al-Anon members, usually teenagers, whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking. Young people come together to:
Share experience, strength and hope with each other
Discuss their difficulties
Learn effective ways to cope with their problems
Encourage one another
Help each other understand the principles of the Al-Anon/Alateen program
Learn how to use the Twelve Steps and Alateen’s Twelve Traditions.
Alateen members learn:
Compulsive drinking is a disease
They can detach themselves emotionally from the drinker’s problems while continuing to love the person
They are not the cause of anyone else’s drinking or behavior
They cannot change or control anyone but themselves
They have spiritual and intellectual resources with which to develop their own potentials, no matter what happens at home
They can build satisfying and rewarding life experiences for themselves
